Obul Feridun -
The Ancient Instrument Maker

A Workshop of Civilisations

Obul Feridun isn’t a “maker of instruments” in the usual sense. In a small workshop tucked behind Istanbul’s trade corridors, he rebuilds instruments that vanished centuries ago, using rock carvings, miniatures, museum archives, and oral history as his blueprint.

We filmed with him because his workshop reflects something essential about Istanbul. In its smallest, almost invisible spaces, you often find the work that carries the greatest weight. Behind an unmarked door, entire histories are being rebuilt by hand. His workshop is a microcosm of the city itself, where Central Asia, Anatolia, Siberia, and the Altai sit on the same shelf, waiting to be heard again.
